What is More Important; Statue Or A Public Library?

A lot of you would be in your 20s and that the letter which follows will resonate with your
aspirations and hopes from the government. During a time when our government would rather
spend thousands of crores on a statue rather than building hospitals, schools, etc, in the name
of nationalism, I believe the following letter to the Editor of ‘The Chronicle’ by Dr Bhimrao Ramji
Ambedkar is especially an important read for everyone.

Dr Ambedkar wrote this letter when he was a post-graduate student at Columbia University,
New York, United States of America and was in his 20s. He sent this letter on a proposal by the
Bombay Municipal Corporation to erect a statue of Sir Phirozshah Mehta in Bombay.

Referring to this above proposal, Baba Saheb Dr Ambedkar wrote, “Permit me to say that
individually I regard this particular form of Sir P. M. Mehta memorial to be very trivial and
unbecoming, to say the least. I have been at pains to understand why his memorial cannot
be in a form which will not only be a true memorial of him but will be of permanent use to posterity. As combining these two purposes, I would suggest that in my humble opinion the memorial of Sir P. M. Mehta should be in the form of a public library in Bombay to be called
Sir Pherozshah Mehta Library.”
